Sardinian handicrafts on display

12 years on from the last edition, the 19th Biennial of Sardinian Handicrafts will soon be inaugurated in Sassari. The title selected for the show is ‘Domus’, a word playing tribute to the symbolic heart of Sardinian culture: the home. For Sardinians, just as for Latin peoples, ‘Domus’ means the home – a space that in traditional island society was extremely simple and humble. It is therefore from the memory of this basic space that an exhibition has emerged, one focusing not only the home’s forms but also its logic. The show re-evokes the Sardinian home, adapting it to today’s lifestyles and aesthetic trends. ‘Domus’ is an idea of Sardinia paired with an idea of the contemporary: a warm, comfortable way of living featuring an elegance made up of history, memories and manual skills. Sponsored by the Sardinia Regional Council, the Biennial of Sardinian Handicrafts - Domus will be held in Sassari from 26th June through to 29th August. It sees the display of 250 items created by 33 designers and made by 60 Sardinian workshops. ‘Domus’ promises to reveal a decided lively spirit within the Sardinian handicrafts scene: even if some sectors have failed to endure modern change, others have developed well, such as jewellery-making, textiles and ceramics. The involvement of designers – who have not only rethought fields of application for techniques but have also come up with new yet rich forms echoing tradition – has in many cases been the seed for subsequent teamwork.
